Nursing home poverty is real...and threatens more people than ever.
Even with the population aging in greater numbers, most Americans are unprepared for the high costs of nursing home care and assisted living--and those costs are rising substantially every year.
What Have You Done to Protect Yourself and Your Family?
I’m not going to need it.
Most of us feel that way. Roughly half of people who reach age 65 will require a nursing home stay and about 10 percent will stay there 5 years or more.
My health insurance/Medicare will pay for it.
Many incorrectly believe that Medicare or private health insurance will pay for long term care. It does not.
I’ll pay the nursing home myself.
Perhaps. Keep in mind the average cost of a nursing home in Michigan is $72,000 a year – and is increasing every year. Many nursing home residents will need to find a way to access Medicaid to pay for it.
My kids will take care of me.
This is a well-intentioned plan that rarely works out. Most children want to be there for their parents but the demands of jobs, families, travel and the need for specialized nursing skills, often makes that impossible.
My loved one is already in a nursing home – it’s too late to do anything now.
Wrong! There is still a lot that can be done. But, there’s no time to waste, and it is important that you contact us right away.
